Shelter Services

Safe, emergency housing for families.

A Safe Place for Families to Rest and Rebuild

When families lose safe housing, they need more than a temporary place to stay. They need compassion and support. Family Promise of West Michigan provides safe emergency shelter that keeps families together and helps them take the next steps toward permanent housing.

How the Program Works

  • Multiple Shelter Locations: Family Promise operates over 48 rooms of family shelter across Kent County, offering safe, welcoming spaces for families and children.
  • Essential Support: Families have access to meals, laundry facilities, and daily essentials to meet their immediate needs.
  • Personalized Case Management: Dedicated case managers work with each family to create a plan for housing stability, connecting them with community support and financial resources.
  • Path to Permanent Housing: Every family receives guidance and encouragement to reach long-term goals — so their stay in shelter is temporary, but their progress lasts.

What Families Receive:

Impact & Outcomes

Through emergency shelter services, families have a place to stay that is welcoming and safe. By providing temporary shelter, families are able to catch their breath and focus on finding stable housing. Case managers work with families to find housing and maintain long-term stability.

Young children experience homelessness differently from adults. Family Promise provides specialized support for kids, including:

  • Educational Resources: Navigation support to preschool programs, tutoring, and enrichment activities.
  • Social-Emotional Support: Family engagement activities and parenting coaching to help children process stress.
  • Healthy Development: Support for physical, cognitive, and emotional growth, ensuring kids continue to thrive even in times of housing instability.
